Konkatsu (婚活), literally “marriage hunting,” is a well-established cultural concept in Japan describing the active, often quite structured pursuit of marriage — distinct from casual dating in both mindset and platform choice. Apps like Omiai and the marriage-focused side of Pairs are built specifically around this: profiles often state income, family background and marriage timeline more explicitly than casual apps like Tapple or with ever would. Being clear about which mode you’re in from the start avoids a lot of mismatched conversations.

Most Japanese apps — Pairs, Tapple, with and Omiai — follow a gendered pricing model where men typically pay a monthly fee (commonly ¥3,000–4,900, roughly $20–34) while women use core features largely free. This is different from Tinder, Bumble and OkCupid, which use more typical global freemium pricing regardless of gender.

It’s extremely common in Japan to move a conversation to LINE, the dominant messaging app, fairly soon after matching. This is normal and not itself a red flag — but it’s exactly why a video call before meeting matters more here than it might elsewhere, since LINE conversations can continue for a long time without either side confirming the other’s identity.

Japan does not currently have nationwide legal recognition of same-sex marriage, though a growing number of municipalities, including Tokyo, issue partnership certificates that provide some limited recognition. Grindr has an active user base for gay men, concentrated mainly in Tokyo and Osaka, and HER has a smaller but present community for lesbian and queer women.
