Established matchmaking companies like Duo and Gayeon still run seon services today, connecting people based on detailed personal criteria. Some apps have adopted more structured, intent-driven formats — Amanda’s approval process and Noondate’s once-daily matching both echo this same seriousness digitally.

Spec culture refers to the common Korean practice of stating concrete personal qualifications upfront — education, job, height, income and family background — much more explicitly than in many other countries. Our survey found 51% of respondents noticed this coming up earlier in conversations than expected. This isn’t inherently a red flag; it’s a genuine cultural norm, though inconsistent or exaggerated “specs” over time are worth noticing.

Almost all South Korean men complete around 18-21 months of mandatory military service, typically in their early twenties, which frequently pauses or ends relationships and shapes dating timelines significantly. It’s common and unremarkable for daters to discuss military service status and timing fairly early — treating this as a normal planning factor, not a taboo topic, matters here more than in most other countries we cover.

South Korea does not have nationwide legal recognition of same-sex marriage or civil unions, and social attitudes remain more conservative than in some other developed Asian markets, though visibility is notably higher in parts of Seoul such as Itaewon’s “Homo Hill” area. Grindr has an active user base in major cities, and HER has a smaller but present community for lesbian and queer women.
